Several families narrowly escaped death on Thursday after a fuel tanker veered off the road at Makindu on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Witnesses said the tanker skid, hitting down a wall in a residential area.

Several houses and shops were flattened during the incident that left residents in shock and disbelief.

When Citizen Digital arrived at the scene, a crowd had already gathered trying to catch a glimpse into the bizarre accident.

According to the truck driver, the steering wheel locked as he was overtaking another vehicle, making him lose control.

The area chief said the truck was headed to Nairobi from Makindu when the accident occurred.
