The Real Househelp of Kawangware’s DJ Shiti is a real definition of the phrase “From Grass To Grace.”
Steven Oduor Dede, his real name, is one of the fastest-rising comedians in town. DJ Shiti who first started his comedy career in Nakuru has had a tough past.
Talking to Jeff Koinange and comedian Jalang’o, Shiti revealed that he was once homeless as he spent lonely nights on the streets of Nairobi. The comedian who was raised in Mumias, first started his career in Nakuru before coming to grace the Churchill Show.
“Usanii ilianzia Nakuru, then nikapigia Jalang’o simu akanituma Kenya Comedy ilikua hosted by Fred Omondi ingawa nilikua sijaelewa comedy ya Nairobi. Then akanipatia platform pale Kenya corner,Nikarudi Nakuru”
Jalang’o who has been his mentor then directed him to Churchill show was also discussed as he revealed his origin story:
“Nikaenda pale Churchill wakati ilirudi tena, Jalas akanituma pale.So mimi kitu nilikua nataka ilikua tu nipate Platform. Ilikua 2013.Nikaenda nikafanya audition. Performance ya kwanza i gave it my all.
So after elections nikakuja Nairobi sasa vizuri. This time nikafanya show na nikakua nikae Nairobi. Kitambo nilikua nakuja nafanya show na ninarudi.Nilikua nadhani nikukuja Nairobi wale mafriends zangu waniambia ‘Baba Lala Hapa Kwa Kiti.’”
Well, the comedian, who once identified himself with the name Magazine during the Churchill show continued to narrate how his close friends fled him during those hard times:
“Tulichat na wao kutoka Nakuru nikikua kufika Kangemi wote wakakua wateja. Please call me nikawatumia zote.Nikamaliza hiyo usiku town. Usiku ilikua mrefu.Ukiingia club ukae kidogo bouncer anakuuliza unakunywa nini.”
Shiti went ahead to say:
Siku ya pili tunakutana na Jalas pale KNT namdanganya naishi na cousin yangu Huruma. Huruma enyewe nilikua sijakanyanga.Jalas akanipatia fare kumbe ni ya kushinda nayo town usiku. So ikakua nimezoea tu pale town. Naenda rehearsal but nikirudi ni town tu pale. Kuna mahali kunaitwa Koinange street.”
